Today, Saturday the 6th of March,2021, a fire incident occurred at early hours in the morning at Amobi Street within the vicinity of Ochanja Market razing down five buildings housing plastic and rubber footwear dealers.

The cause of the fire was not immediately ascertained but sources at the scene told Pechilly Investigative Correspondent that a suspected electricity surge caused the fire incident as it started immediately PHCN restored power to the area early Saturday morning.

According to an eyewitness living in the neighborhood, the fire started from one building at around 4:am housing rubber foot wares and plastics before spreading to other nearby houses destroying goods and properties valued at over 500 million naira. People living in the adjoining houses ran out from their homes as the fire is spreading rapidly.

Some Shop owners and neighbours at the scene could do little to quench the fire as its intensity is so much and its spreading quickly, rather they resorted in salvaging some of their goods and properties from the adjoining houses before it gets caught in the inferno.

However, hours later ,Anambra state fire service men from Onitsha main market came to the scene with their water trucks to put out the fire.

Some traders and shop owners were seen wailing in anguish to the loss of their livelihoods, others were seen picking the pieces of what was left in their gutted shops. Many at the scene lamented the repetition of the fire incidents around the area within a short period.
