A former Senator representing Anambra Central, Sen. Victor Umeh has cautioned Church leaders against denominational politics and hate speech.
Umeh gave the caution during the 2021 seminar/workshop organised by the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, Awka Diocese at Retreat, Pastoral and Conference Centre, Okpuno, Awka over the weekend.
The senator explained that such acts were capable of instigating a denominational crisis ahead of the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra. He harped on the need to elect a credible person that would move the state to greater heights.
He called for unity of purpose, stressing that politicians should shun sentiments in order to avoid losing the election, noting that election time was a peculiar period as well as trying time for the Church.
Umeh denounced a video that went viral claiming that recruitment into the Anambra State Civil Service was based on religious denomination where only Catholics were employed. He said that such a thing never existed, explaining that it was a strategy by those who want to de-market the state to sow seeds of discord and a direct assault on the Roman Catholic faith.
The Papal Knight noted that a venerable man made that video to castigate the Roman Catholic Church, urging those involved in such act to apologize to both the Church and the state government for orchestrating falsehood. Umeh called on all to be alert, strong and pragmatic in order to be able to discern certain political machinations and manipulations working against the conduct of free and fair elections in the state.
